What Customers Say About Marine Diesel Engines: Maintenance, Troubleshooting, and Repair:

My copies of this book has grease stained fingerprints throughout. A lot of folks have told me they think this book is redundant, because much of the info is covered in Mr. Calder's Mechanical & Electrical Manual but this smaller book is easier to work with when working around your engine and the material is presented differently enough that the book is one I believe you should have if you live on a boat.
I'm at a bit of a loss on how to review this. It's a great reference, BUT if you already have Calder's Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual: How to Maintain, Repair, and Improve Your Boat's Essential Systems (referred to my most cruisers just as "Calder"), this book does not add a lot that's not covered there. If you already own Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual: How to Maintain, Repair, and Improve Your Boat's Essential Systems, I'd recommend getting a book by a different author on the diesel as there's a greater likelihood of one of them having just the piece of information you need. My suggestion of an alternative:Troubleshooting Marine DieselsOther reviews have covered this book in detail, plus there's a new edition out, so I won't go into further detail.
Nigel Calder wrote many books, but «Marine Diesel Engines» is the first one I actually read. Calder knows I'm an amateur and takes the time to explain everything and make me feel intelligent. I can't wait for the others, because his style is straightforward, his method is step-by-step and logical and the pictures are handpicked and drive the final «gotcha.». In other words, Mr. I love being an amateur. Francois Cote, Montreal, QC, Canada.
This book is a very helpful tool when approaching a marine diesel engine. This is a good book that bridges the gap between the specific engine manual and my general lack of diesel engine knowledge. Nigel Calder is clear and understandable as always.
I try to read as many books on engines as I can. I own GotEngines.com and I always have a strong interest in learning more about each and every engine, especially diesel engines.Unfortunately I carry very few marine engines, but as an engine expert I'd recommend this book to anyone.
